Fear not. "A Compendium of Kisses," the guide to everything oscular -- that's "of or pertaining to kissing" for the unenlightened -- tells all about one of the world's most universal gestures, whether simple greeting or sublime.

"When I came to look at the kiss, the romantic side is such a small part of it," said British novelist and actress Lana Citron, who compiled the book.

"I love how when you're born, the first thing is, you're kissed, you're welcomed into the world. It's this little gesture that follows you throughout life, through all the most important parts of your life."

Citron's interest in kisses began with a short story she wrote a decade ago about a lonely woman who collected kisses in jars -- such as one for the lover who spurned her, one that was full of yearning -- and labeled them.

That led to her invitation to do an installation of kisses in jars, all labeled, as part of an art exhibition. The response of viewers sent her to the internet, searching out books on kisses and deciding to write her own when nothing seemed just right.

"It was almost like opening a Pandora's chest and just being overwhelmed by all the different ways a kiss is expressed, the meanings attached to it and the things it symbolizes," she said.

"I fell in love with it, I really did. I was submerged in the world of kisses for a year and came out of it with a book." Read on >>

The existence of pheromones — secreted or excreted chemical signals that produce a social response — in humans has been debated, although research has shown that human sweat communicates information about individual identity, genetic relatedness, emotional states and health status, says Denise Chen, who studies human olfaction at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Mouse tears contain sex-specific pheromones2, but scientists have not previously demonstrated that human crying is a form of chemical signalling. "This work provides really exciting evidence for another source of human chemosignals in tears," says Chen.

In the study, women watched sad films alone and captured their own tears with a vial that they held under their eye. Later, 24 men sniffed jars containing either the women's tears or saline that had been trickled down the women's cheeks, and then they wore a pad dipped in one of the fluids under their nostrils. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the hypothesis that the vagina generates electric waves which effect vaginal contraction during penile thrusting.METHODS: In 24 healthy female volunteers, the electric waves of the vagina were recorded by two electrodes applied to its wall. The vaginal pressure was registered by a manometric tube. The electric waves and vaginal pressure were recorded at rest and on vaginal distension by condom in increments of 10 ml of carbon dioxide. The test was repeated after vaginal anesthetization proximally and distally to the electrodes.

RESULTS: Slow waves (SWs) were recorded from the two electrodes with regular rhythm and similar frequency, amplitude and conduction velocity. They were randomly followed or superimposed by action potentials (APs). Vaginal pressure increase was coupled with APs. Large-volume condom distension significantly increased the electric waves’ variables and pressure. Upon vaginal anesthetization, the electric waves were recorded proximal but not distal to the anesthetized area.

CONCLUSIONS: Electric waves could be recorded from the vagina. They spread caudad. A pacemaker was postulated to exist at the upper vagina evoking these waves. The electric waves seem to be responsible for the vaginal contractile activity. Large-volume vaginal distension effected an increase in the vaginal electric waves and pressure which probably denotes increased vaginal muscle contraction. It appears that penile thrusting during coitus stimulates the vaginal pacemaker which effects an increase in vaginal electric activity and muscle contractility and thus leading to an increase in sexual arousal. The vaginal pacemaker seems to represent the G spot, which is claimed to be a small area of erotic sensitivity in the vagina. The electrovaginogram may act as a diagnostic tool in the investigation of sexual disorders.” [source]

A quarter of women over 35 say they never have sex

More than a quarter of women aged 35-plus say they 'never' have sex, according to research.

Twenty-eight per cent claim to abstain, with the highest figure occurring in Scotland, where 38 per cent are celibate.

Women in the Midlands are most likely to make love regularly, with 32 per cent saying they have sex every week.

Couples therapist Paula Hall, who works with the relationship charity Relate, said the results of the survey highlight the immense pressure women feel when it comes to sex.

This in turn could lead them to underrate their sex lives.

She said celebrity kiss-and-tell stories fuel the notion that frequent sex is the norm, but the reality is very different with the daily grind of work affecting the libido of many women.

Miss Hall added: 'It has led to exaggerated expectations, that everyone else is getting it three or four times a week and your behaviour isn't normal.

'This may result in women saying they never have sex when they may only occasionally be having sex.'

The survey, released by the Sky Real Lives cable channel to mark the launch of a series called The Secret Guide To Women's Health, also looked at the effect of hormones on women's lives and their health fears.

It found most women admit to violent mood swings at certain times of the month, with 35 per cent of those aged 35 to 44 saying they feel violent tendencies towards themselves or someone else during their period.

Women Sense a Man's Attraction By His Sweat

A woman can tell if you are attracted to them by the smell of your sweat, according to a new study. A man's sweat smells differently depending on what mood he is in and women can sense these changes.

In the study conducted at Rice University in Texas, two types of sweat was collected from a group of men: one was called 'normal' and the other was called 'sexual.' The normal sweat was gathered while the guys watched an educational video while the sexual sweat was gathered while watching erotic videos.

19 lucky women were then asked to smell the two types sweat while being monitored for brain activity. The women's brains not only recognized the different scents, but also responded to them. The sexual sweat lit up a different part of the women's brains.

Women prefer boozy sex

MILLIONS of women drink alcohol before having sex because they lack confidence in their bodies, a study has found.

Almost half those questioned said they preferred sex while under the influence of alcohol because it helped them lose their inhibitions and to be more adventurous in bed.

Researchers, who surveyed 3000 women aged between 18 and 50, found the average woman has slept with eight men, but was drunk with at least five of them.

On two occasions they couldn't even remember the man's name the next day.

An astonishing 48.5 per cent said they preferred sex while under the influence and some 6 per cent of women had never had sex while sober.

Kathryn Lakeland, of women's hygiene products firm Femfresh, which carried out the study, said the results showed how women were severely lacking in confidence.

"The fact that alcohol plays an integral role in their love lives shows women are looking for a boost in self-esteem when it comes to their bedroom antics," she said.
